Follow-up Comment #1, bug #63336 (project octave):
As a shorter term workaround: if you go to the Preferences for the Octave GUI,
then to the Command tab, you'll find a setting for "Cursor type". You can
change that from IBeam cursor to Block cursor and that will at least make it
more visible than the default.
