I'm at a loss as to how you can end up with an old configure script if
you really are checking out current CVS code. Make sure the top of
configure.in reads "$Id: configure.in,v 1.40", and after you run
./autogen.sh, verify that the top of configure reads "From configure.in
Revision: 1.40 ."
Also check for local mods to the configure script with "cvs diff
configure.in".
