Darwin requires an Intel BX chipset as it seems, so it won't run on my
box (VIA 686a). 

No luck in getting behind the configure problem either. There's no file
named py-compile, and none is required by the script or any of the .m4
macros. Unless of course some macros provided by Fink or MacOS X are
different and do require such a file.
