After some experiments, I think that this is causing (most) of the 
trouble below. Unable to resolve the AM_PATH_SDL macro, no aclocal.m4 
file is created. (Can you verify this - at least this is what happens 
here).

Without that file in place, all the rest seems to go totally wrong.


As for the 0.3 tree: once aclocal.m4 has been successfully created, 
processing it with 1.7 works. There are a few warnings, but nothing 
serious.


So to repeat: make sure aclocal can find sdl.m4, then all the rest 
should work okay. If you have problems with the 0.3 autogen.sh, simply 
adapt it to your needs and it should work as well.
