Does anyone have experience with using very small surfacemount ceramic
resonators or crystals with AVR's? I am working on a board with not much
room left and I am thinking of trying a small ceramic resonator with built
in capacitor instead of the standard
HC49 package crystal and two 20pF caps. The operating frequency is 16MHz
and the chip is the atmega8. Any drawbacks to using these small ceramic
resonators?

We've never had any problems with them, other than the occasional hand-soldered prototype requiring rework. We're currently using 6, 8 and 12 MHz resonators with Mega16, Mega32, 90s8535, 90s4433, and Mega8535 designs.

We have had a problem with a certain brand of resonator failing to start when used with a certain non-AVR microcontroller, but I can't really comment on that because I don't really know the details. My impression is that we got a bad batch of resonators. This was a 4 MHz part.

Regards,
