I am the same.  Getting SAGE to build on OS X was much harder for me than
even getting it to build on Cygwin.   I'm forcing myself to learn OS X
right now (by using it), partly since so many potential end users are
using it these days.   By the way, Justin Walker (address@hidden) is often
extremely helpful and sorting out compilation issues on OS X.

Why do you need fink for building axiom?  Probably you just need the latest
Xcode install (it's a very good idea to get the latest version, since there
were very annoying bugs in earlier versions).
