Its safe to partition in VB as long as your using a hard drive image you created and not an actual drive. Netinstall would be fine I'm sure. No need for a gui or anything. I'm not sure what all is needed to install after that.
Another option would be to use "saffron" or the server I gave you access to. Let me know if you would prefer this option. I could also set up cron to build nightly. It would take about 2 hours to build for each platform.

Well, I got as far as running the VirtualBox with my Debian netinst disk
in the cd drive and it was about to start installing Debian. I chickened
out at that point. I suppose it is perfectly safe in fact? When it talks
about re-partitioning disks and so on, it is all going on in a virtual
world? But it will require downloading the whole of Debian stable? Or
should I be doing some minimal download...?
