I've also been considering the Audigy 2 card as a
short-term solution for narrow-band experimentation.
Does anyone else use this card with GnuRadio, or
know if a suitable driver exists for Red-Hat Linux?

Is there some reason why you could not consider using an
external PCI card like the Creative Audigy II which truly and genuinely
samples at 96 khz ? Bought OEM without all the Windoze cruft they are
around $73 in the US....
Hard to see an obvious reason for sticking just with the
motherboard sound chips...
