that is what i prefer too, but i think us beeing open source people we can in 
a lot of cases not afford to be picky about the fact that applications follow 
a lot of different styles and philosophies. i think i would the most 
desireable to make open source applications as interoperable as possible. 
there have been rumors that people where thinking about making gnome and kde 
more compatible on the level of their document models. 

i have to concede to m$ that by enforcing their apis they make sure that 
windows apps are very consistently compatible to other windows apps. on *nix 
the interoperability often does not go farther than plain text and the x 
selection, which is a definite disadvantage in the competition for users.

some people might call this treason but i would not mind enabling gworkspace 
to use kde ioslaves, why after all would you want reinvent the wheel?

in the this light i would regard it as highly important to have gnustep 
implementations of things like xml-rpc or corba since that would make 
interfacing with application frameworks a lot easier.
