With any interface, there are three factors:

 1. Usability
 2. User's expectations
 3. Marketing (Standing apart from the competition)

We want GNUstep to be usable. We want to make user's feel comfortable. We want to stand out. Sometimes we have to make decisions that favor one over the other.

The usual approach in the open source world seems to be to make UI's very, very customizable. An outstanding example might be the Motif library where you can have easily more UI customization than actual code.

This is straight opposite to what the Mac and NeXT UI tries to be: simple, consistent, easy to learn (for both, developers and users).

we have to somehow reach a decision on what the default option is and all stand behind it and push it like it's the best interface ever.

GNUstep seems to be more resistant against featuritis than average. How about pushing what GNUstep actually has: simplicity and consitency.
