That term is very hard to interpret--I don't know what it means.

I think you're trying to solve the right problem, just not in quite
the right way.  I am looking for some broader category, *not* about
"folding" or "outlining" but still simple and natural, that
distinguishes these modes from the other groups of minor modes.
