This seems to be something of a problem in general actually -- even
though the GNU coding standards specify an interface which can be
implemented in many ways, people often seem to mentally conflate them
with using the auto* tools, and if they decide to use some other build
system/tool, they don't even consider trying to follow that interface
(even though it's often rather simple to do so in many cases).
