Which makes this rather off-topic from what Toon Claes was mentioning
upthread in address@hidden, which is that the main benefit
people get from platforms like Github or Gitlab is not that they're just
some dumb web UI or CI system on the side, but that they're the primary
coordination point & way to contribute to the project.

As a datapoint of one: I have ~20 patches in Magit and a bunch more in
various Elisp projects hosted on Github because contributing is so easy.

Usually when I discover bugs in things part of Emacs itself I just work
around them, since starting to contribute to the project would require
signing papers etc., which would be a huge hurdle compared to what I'm
fixing (none of my Magit contributions are major, just small fixes here
& there).
