Thanks for taking the time to look into this problem.    I will be 
interested to know what you find.

Now it is time to show my ignorance ... Is this rewriting method that 
you refer to where you do C-c C-e.  That didn't seem to work for 
previous days though it does work for today.

With a blank diary file, it updates today as "No entries" but is a nop 
for previous days.
