Thanks.  I've read a little more on the structure of soundfonts and
with your advice here, I'll give it another shot tonight.  I
understand that the more samples you add, the more accurate your
sounds will be (since pitch shifting is a lossy process) - but this is
more relevant if you are creating an instrument such as a piano which
is just one instrument at different pitches.

In my case, I'm using different drum sounds taken from Freecycle and
want them all available in a soundfont rather than just one instrument
at different pitches.  Is this why I just want a keyzone of just one
semitone for each sound/sample - so no pitch shifting takes place and
in my sequencer, two adjacent keys will have different drum sounds? 
Does this sound like I have the correct understanding?
