  Sounds like a better solution all around would be to enable the auto
hinter by default in Xft for fonts which have no hinting information.

  I think it would be nice to have some way of knowing the level of
hinting information in a font through the API.  Then Xft could use
FT_LOAD_FORCE_AUTOHINT as appropriate.

  As mentioned, not enabling the bytecode interpreter makes some fonts
unusable.
