Some people want to use bitmap fonts also in modern
applications/desktops like Gnome or KDE. For example many people
prefer bitmap fonts in gnome-terminal or konsole, some want bitmap
fonts even in kwrite or gedit.

In case of Gnome2, if GDK_USE_XFT=1 you can only use fonts via Xft,
you cannot select fonts via XLFD any more. I believe this is good, it
is ugly to select fonts in two completely different ways, it is much
cleaner to use *only* Xft if it is available. Now Xft works
even without the RENDER extension (although slower), i.e. it can
be used practically always.

But it is not nice if switching to Xft removes the option to use the
old bitmap fonts which many people still like (especially in
terminals) just because it becomes impossible to select the bitmap
font one was previously using via XLFD now via Xft.
