That's a very interesting patch, and it will probably be in the next
release of the library. However, before committing it, I'd like to
collect the opinion of Juliusz and Keith. I suspect that such a change
might have some unexpected consequences on FontConfig and/or the
FreeType2-based font engine that is now in XFree86 (i.e. the one that
handles "core" X11 fonts, with all of XLFD madness :-)
