Fairly sure thats the default in squeeze. It can be configured in preferences.

Ah, yes, I know the user can configure it! I just thought the "Downloads" directory would be a better default.

do you have yelp installed? If it is some mime package/s might be missing.

It's installed and works well when I open the manuals of default applications like GCalctool, Hamster, Empathy, etc.

If you run abiword from a shell does it print anything when you select those options?

No. And when I kill the application nothing abnormal is printed to the shell.
