Other than for configs, no.   See `tla buildcfg -H', and in particular
the `--release-id' option.

Integration of revision control into source and build processes and so
forth is a good idea -- but I doubt that that mechanism is the one we
want.    It happened to be convenient to implement in CVS (and it's
antecdents) -- that's the only reason you've heard of it.
