Alas, I did put the following in my .ssh/config file and it still didn't
work:
address@hidden:~$ cat .ssh/config
Host savannah
HostName savannah.nongnu.org
Protocol 1
That is, running "sftp savannah" didn't work. "ssh savannah" logged me
in and got me to a shell prompt just fine. I do not have an sshv2
authorized_key on Savannah, so I know ssh was using protocol 1.
