If I don't go into details its because I would either expect it to be
obvious or (in this case) it does not matter.
This point is really irrelevant to this discussion and is a major usability
issue to be implemented and discussed after a proof-of-concept has been
created.
To humor you; GUIs are very much object oriented and object reuse is
something that every GUI builder assumes. In that respect creating a
widget like I described means to re-use the already existing document-view
widget. Using a common design pattern this can be extended to add some GUI
widgets that allow merging.
It really does not matter how this will be solved; as long as you get the
point that the original view of the document is going to be used to show
the differences.
