Gettext is small and very unstable, because i18n is not a solved
problem, and development continues. It's also built into glibc, so the
single largest userbase has no use for an embedded copy. Go for c.

[Just be aware that something kinda like gettext is built into libc on
solaris, but is broken, and should not be used; feature tests should
be crafted to reject this].
