 Its not particularly.

 The Democrats want to turn us into a fascist state where everyone is 
nice.

 The Republicans want to turn us into a fascist state where everyone is 
moral.

 So far, we've been able to play the hippies off against the nazis 
enough that
they're caught in gridlock. Except in California, but they're going 
broke now, so
they may not be able to afford all those secret police.

 Occasionally something stupid slips through like the Gay Marriage 
Amendment, but
you'll notice that got defeated since it needs a 2/3rds majority (Love 
those founding fathers, pretty sharp cookies.)
