MusiXLyR is such a beast which is written for MusiXTeX to handle
lyrics. You type in the verses with those hyphenations which should
be considered. During typesetting it posts the syllables either
with or without the hyphens. MusiXLyR is written by Rainer Dunker
and maybe available only from http://www.gmd.de/Misc/Music/ under
MusiXTeX/add-ons.

It uses a lot of \expandafter\expandafter\expandafter\expandafter...
so that I never was able to understand what really is happening.
Nevertheless, you type something like

 \setlyrics{verse1}{Al-le mei-ne Ent-chen ...}

and you lateron get

 Alle meine Ent - - - chen.

or

 Al-le mei-ne Ent  -  -  -  chen.

or ...

depending on the music.
