The GR-601 and GR-601W both use the USB to serial converter. As do all
other USB GPS I have ever seen.  The only difference between the two
is that the PPS is connected to the Serial converter only on the W
model.

you should have a line that looks like this:

You may need to wait a minute or two to get it.

Another test, go into your gpsd source tree, then into the
contrib directory.  Compile and run the ppscheck program.

The output should look like this:
