Also note how that line was conviniently drawn just barely outside of what the Linux project was doing at the time, I guess most likely so that he could still find developers to build his Hurd by saying "Linux does not respect your freedoms"

No we don't.

One of the defining principles of free software is that nobody is forced into
anything.  And we never do it.   In fact that forcing people into things is
exactly what we OPPOSE.
