GTK will let you *display* a button that doesn't have a parent? Are you sure
about that?

No, but I intend to soon, I promise. I'm working full time and also taking
classes and it's the end of the semester and I'm sure I can come up with
some more excuses with more effort ;) Once I get a chance to look at it I
may see some things that would make the FOX implementation a little easier.
