I am not contrary to a java GUI, but I don't want to have _only_ a java
GUI :-) -- I'm waiting for java programmers to come forward... :-)
I'd be pleased to add a frontends/java/ dir to the distribution...

if people really want to use the java GUI on systems where the gnome GUI
would work as well, they are free to do so...
