Further update: Well, I don't know why that export did not contain attachment 
urls, but I just repeated the export, AFAIK in an identical way as before, and 
this one does contain url attachments.  There are no parameters on the export, 
so nothing to get wrong.  I've modified the author fields and it's being 
imported again.  Now we wait another 40 hours or so for the import to complete 
...
