But I think that the lyrics spacing clearly is a bug (or missing default 
values), as inside a markup \column, the vertical text spacing is correct. 
This looks correctly in 2.13.10 :

\markup \line {
  \column { b b b }
  \column { a a a }
}

but this does not:

<<
  { c' d' e' }
  \lyrics { p a a }
  \lyrics { a a a }
  \lyrics { a a a }
>>
