Are you sure that you want to write e1 ~ | e2 and not e1( | e2) ?
I.e. a tie or a slur? I.e. is this one note e that lasts 6 beats or is
it two that last 4 and 2 beats?

As you two syllables, it looks to me as if these are two notes and a
slur would help you to do what you want.
