Anyway, opening the User's Guide PDF file in GSview doesn't work also,
you'd get failures for the same pages. So I've prepared the two
relevant pattern/texture examples from PLRM (attached) and tested
them. The PLRM examples fails too.

The PaintType 1 pattern barely works, while the PaintType 2 pattern
doesn't work at all. Specifically, for the latter, deleting "fill" in
PaintProc makes the error go away, but try as I might, I could not
make Ghostscript render any pattern.

I think it's a problem with some Ghostscript *devices*.

Both PLRM examples render fine with the x11 and png16m devices (and
others), cf. the attached example images generated with:

  gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=png16m -sOutputFile=test_plrm_ex1.png \
     -r100 -g640x400 test_plrm_ex1.ps

The x11alpha (used by gv) renders example 1 incorrectly and fails with
an "unrecoverable error" for example 2.

The pdfwrite device (used by ps2pdf) renders example 1 incorrectly;
example 2 is rendered correctly.

Agree. So, should users of Lout be notified of this behaviour, say in a note or FAQ somewhere in the canonical package? ... since it doesn't seem likely that the problem will be fixed anytime soon.
