To handle Unicode i18n, AltPT requires Unicode patches for 2.5 or Zope 
2.6. Besides that it is no problem with Unicode in .po. There is 
japanese .po of Plone in UTF-8 and there are screenshots of Plone in 
japanese. Take a look at http://collective.plone.org/i18n there is box 
in links right-hand and Screenshots.
