Follow-up Comment #7, bug #37290 (project octave):

I think that the demo creates a figure with multiple handles in a way that
exercised a route that hasn't been tested as of yet.  Attached is a patch that
fixes a spelling error, __ploty_axes__, and also first checks that the
__appdata__ field exists before proceeding.
