Follow-up Comment #24, bug #40064 (project octave):

Agree Mike, it seems to be the DefaultLineInterpreter property that affects
legend rendering, not DefaultAxesInterpreter. I was toggling all three at
once, and assuming it was the Axes property having the effect, since the
documentation explicitly tells the user that a legend is an Axes object. 

So there are really multiple issues:

  * Legend is documented as being an Axes object, yet does not hew to the
DefaultAxesInterpreter property in any way, neither reporting nor rendering in
accordance with that property.

  * Legend perversely hews to the DefaultLineInterpreter property, but only in
its functional behavior, not in what it reports as its own 'interpreter'
property, which is always reported as 'tex'.
