OK, based on your concern here and your example, I would like to try to make
the case that introducing this patch would be a Very Bad Idea, for a variety
of reasons which span usability, documentation, and the script writer's ease
(or lack thereof) in quickly and accurately diagnosing the source of
Matlab/Octave incompatibility when it does occur. In my view, a superior
solution would be to have legend()s inherit the DefaultAxesInterpreter
property, and live with the [somewhat different, but "nicer"] incompatibility
that ensues from that.

I'll be glad to document in detail my rationale for this view, but
unfortunately will not have time to do so until at least the coming weekend or
perhaps even later. So I respectfully request that the patch not be applied
until there's some time to debate the underlying issues, either in the ticket
here or in the ML. Imo, there's quite a bit at stake in getting this right.
