Unfortunate, because it seems to me the present state of affairs regarding the
various interpreter defaults is not only self-inconsistent within Octave, but
also causes (rather than alleviates) Matlab/Octave compatibility and
documentation issues.  Imo, cleaning this up and getting it right is worth
some time so that it doesn't propagate needlessly into future versions.
