You're out of luck, this is still a (known) problem on OSX: only very old
versions of the Java package can (could) be installed on older OSX versions.
In the octave mailing lists there are several threads about this. IIRC the
last one was around fall last year (a little while before the latest java
package release).

A while ago Sergei mentioned Perl-based solutions (for .xls/.xlsx I/O
support in the io package, that is). I intend to have a look at them but in
the coming weeks of summer holiday there are other priorities :-)

If it concerns .xlsx (OOXML) files you might try Markus Bergholz' suggestion
of some weeks ago (I think in the help-octave ML).

Perhaps you can transform the Excel files into csv files (using e.g.,
LibreOffice) - csv2cell (in the io package) can read heterogeneous (text &
numeric data) csv files.
