The version number got dropped from the toolbar because it goes against
the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines... so it's not likely to come
Just to "flog a dead horse" so to speak, I read through the Gnome Human
Interface Guidelines - at least the relevant portion - because I was
curious about it. For those who don't want to read it themselves, here
it is:
"Do not place version numbers, company names, or other information that
is of no immediate use to the user in the window title. These consume
space, making titles in limited spaces such as the system window list
less useful, and add more text the user has to scan to find useful
information. In a "beta" product, where version numbers are critical for
bug information, placing version numbers can be useful, but remove them
from stable releases. Place version information in the about box instead."
So version info is allowed in the title bar of beta's. Really, while
there are "stable" and "beta" releases of Pan now, isn't everything
prior to 1.0 more or less beta?
Just throwing it out there for thought. I did hack the version back into
my build. If anyone is interested, here's the patch:

< /* add version */
< g_string_append (s, " 0.13.92");

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction Charles. That was so
easy even I was able to do it!
