True, but at the price of a performance loss. In my case, I prefer to use
/usr/xpg4/bin/tail rather than a shell script modifying /usr/bin/tail's
arguments on the fly.

Of course, if systems exist without a working tail binary, a
compatibility shell script would be welcome, but I wouldn't bother
before someone actually needs it.
