libffi still not working

You may recall that I am trying to install swarm under Linux Slackware 3.4.  I
now installed libffi; that went very smoothly; compiled objectbase library, and
then compiled the heatbugs example.  Everything seemed great until I typed
        heatbugs
at which point I go an error
        can't load library libffi.so.1

I looked and that library is in my /usr/local/lib directory so I do not
understand where the problem is.  Any ideas?
