Hmm, there seems to be some kind of weird problem with pthread and
Tk/X11 initialization.  Have any Debian 1.3 users had success
installing Swarm or seen error message like this before?

I'm afraid all I can suggest is that you install a stock GCC 2.8.1 and
use the GCC 2.8 binary distribution.
