Absolutely, please don't let me deter any motivated would-be hackers
out there! I know many folks who would like an SQL database backend
for Swarm, and if enough SDG members start requesting it, then clearly
it would get bumped up in priority. We always encourage any parties
interested in development integration along these lines to contact us.
Looking at the 1999 survey, however, suggested that docs and Java
integration were higher priorities (at least for the SDG Hive at that
time), but clearly that may change in the future.

MySQL is not bad. I've used it in the past, it's not "free" in the
GNU-sense of "freely re-distributable", but you can get the source,
and it's supported on a myriad of GNU/Linux and Win32 systems.

MySQL is not distributed under GPL, but looking at their webpage, I
see that they have an older release of MySQL under GPL. There is
also something about a MySQL Free Public License (FPL), but it could
be yet another open-source snake-oil salesman license (like Sun's
"community" license).
