Incidentally, I like to use "$SRCDIR/configure --srcdir=$SRCIDR [etc]",
because 1) it leaves the source tree pristine and 2) I can build multiple
variants from the same source code. (You can see the different subdirectories
in the `build' directory.)

You don't have Emacs in your PATH. (The reason I had it was
because I ran the "runbash" script in the ~temp directory.)

I think we got our wires crossed. My conclusion after banging on your
system a while was that the 7.2.1 compiler tools had linker and/or
assembler bugs that prevented proper linkage of the Swarm shared
libraries. It looked to me from the SGI website like
the 7.3.0 tools could be downloaded. Otherwise, by using --disable-shared
you can at least get Objective C models working.
