I think i am using a 2.95.x version of gcc:

address@hidden defobj]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from
/usr/cscs/linux/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.2/specs
gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)

But i guess I'm using an earlier version of egcs
(which is what i set CC to prior to ./configure):

address@hidden defobj]$ egcs -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.66/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)

But I have to admit I don't understand the relationship
between gcc and egcs...

Anyway, could you remind me of how to configure with
that CFLAGS set? Should I do something like
  export CFLAGS="-Wno-error"
as I do to control the CC?

thanks!
