paul,

thanks for the info.  we currently have
  binutils-2.9.1.0.23
and it seemed to make swarm and heatbugs ok
(except for the link warnings, which i guess we need
to apply the gcc patch for).

but i would upgrade to some recent binutils if marcus
thinks its a good idea.
