I asked Nick Collier that question and I hope he won't mind if I give
you his answer:
"There's two books I usually recommend for
people learning Java and two other good references. The two for learning
are: _Thinking In Java_ by Bruce Eckel and _Core Java Fundamentals_ by
Horstmann and Cornell. The former is really strong on object oriented
stuff and the latter is a good clear guide to learning java. Probably
more of what you are looking for are the references: the best one of
these is _Java in a Nutshell_ by David Flanagan. I think its in its 3rd
edition now and has been split into a core and jfc volume. Its has a
good concise intro to Java and then most of the book is descriptions of
packages, classes and methods. The book I use the most is the _Java
Developer's Almanac_ by Patrick Chan. Its pretty much just a list of
classes and methods without much description. Its very handy though."
