It's not the same thing.  --srcdir means that you can create an empty
directory for object code that isn't in the same place as the 
source code.  This is useful because it means you can build multiple
architectures without having multiple copies of the source code, and
it makes it easy to clean up without touching local modifications
to the sources.  The install location (--prefix) is where the shared
libraries, scripts, headers, etc. end up being installed for users.
For example, I have /src for sources, /build for object code, and /packages
for installation.
