It looks to me like the thing to do would be to set up a server based
on SRB (http://www.npaci.edu/Research/DI/srb) for controlling access
to the files, and then retrofit Swarm and R to use HDF5's support for
this package (just calling one function in HDF5).  I have not used SRB
before, so I don't know how hard it is to set up or how mature it is.
If SRB had practical problems it would almost certainly work to write
a simple server based on MPI and then use HDF5's support for MPI.  One
of the HDF5 guys said that there was work underway to improve parallel
access to HDF5 resources.
